Visiting Austria - Innsbruck - Alpenzoo

Austria Travel Guide > Destinations > Innsbruck > Alpenzoo

From the Alpenzoo, which lies on the southern slope of the Hungerburg plateau, you'll get a magnificent panoramic view of Innsbruck and the surrounding mountains.  The most important feature of the Alpenzoo is that animals that live in the Alps live in their natural surroundings in the Alpenzoo.

The Alpenzoo, situated 727 metres above the sea level, is the highest zoo in the world. Rather than host a range of exotic creatures, the Alpenzoo contains only animals that originate from the Alpine region. Visitors can see more than 1,800 different species ranging from the golden cockerel to the mammoth bison and the bearded vulture with a wing span of more than 3 meters.  Otters play in the water and various weird and wonderful fish types can be viewed in the extraordinary cold water aquarium of the Alpenzoo.   The park also protects endangered species and return them to their natural habitat, the Alps.

As Austria's only "theme zoo", the Alpenzoo gained a good reputation as a place to revitalise and gaze at the variety of nature in silence.  Child-friendly and animal-friendly installations of the Alpenzoo make it a place worth visiting.

The Alpenzoo lies in the Weiherburggasse region.  The admission for adults is 7 EUR and children is 3.50 EUR.
