Visiting Austria - Opera House

Austria Travel Guide > Destinations > Vienna > Opera House

Vienna Opera House is situated in the first district of Vienna at the southern part of the Kärntnerstrasse.  August von Sicardsburg and Eduard van der Nüll built the Vienna Opera House in 1869.

Vienna Opera House has a worldwide reputation for its opera performances and is also very well known because of the famous Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra.  A night at the Vienna Opera House is one of the most impressive events any visitor to Vienna can experience.

Vienna Opera House itself closely resembles Italian Renaissance, as this epoch was very important for art and music.  The first operas of the world were actually written and performed in Italy during the 16th century Renaissance.

The loggia towards the ring boulevard aims to emphasize the Opera House's openness to the public.  It is adorned with a precious cycle representing Mozart's "Magic Flute" and other famous operas accomplished by painter Moritz von Schwind. Numerous statues and figurative embellishments inside and outside of Vienna Opera House shows the festive character of the opera.
